Argentinian Sports Journalism Student Visit

By Don Goodwin

These things take time – but finally Sport Media Canada’s long-planned student visit project came to life last year. Although there are several well-developed schools of sports journalism in South America and modern press, radio and TV sports coverage — most sports journalists still look to North America for trends and innovation in the ever-changing sports coverage craft.

Developing from Sports Media Canada’s membership in A.I.P.S. and specifically in our close involvement with F.E.P.E.D.A., the sub-group of the international body which represents the Americas, Canada offered the Argentinian Sports Journalists’ Association the opportunity to study our practices close-up. The outstanding student in the graduating class of their Sports Journalism school was invited to spend three weeks in Toronto on a ‘total immersion’ sports media experience.

Twenty-year-old Karen Nieva from Buenos Aires was selected by the Sportive Journalists Circle of Buenos Aires as the sports journalism student to enhance her studies with the three week experience in Toronto. Her itinerary in Canada included several days each at The FAN, CBC TV sports and the Toronto Globe & Mail sports department as highlights of her busy three weeks in Canada.

Karen was a guest of honour at the Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards luncheon at the Royal York Hotel last October, following which she returned to her studies in Buenos Aires.
