Shulman, of Toronto, studied actuarial sciences at the University Western Ontario, but after six months of working with numbers, decided he’d rather pursue a career in sports broadcasting. That turned out to be a good thing for Shulman and sports fans who enjoy his calm, conversational approach to calling baseball and college basketball for ESPN in the United States . Shulman is a previous SMC award winner. In 2000 he shared the broadcasting award with Buck Martinez earned primarily for their TSN baseball broadcasting partnership at the time.

Farber, a graduate of Rutgers University, made the circuit of small town newspapers before joining the Montreal Gazette. Colleague and legendary hockey columnist, Red Fisher recalls, “Michael landed on the Montreal sports writing stage like a badly-needed breath of fresh air.” Beginning as a beat writer and in no time at all became a daily columnist. He remained with the newspaper until January, 1994, when, according to Fisher, “ Sports Illustrated made him an offer he couldn’t refuse”. Today Farber is a senior writer with SI.

The Sports Media Canada Awards luncheon is scheduled for the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Thursday, October 25, 2007.
