Media Stars Receive Awards on October 13

Randy Starkman of the Toronto Star and TSN/CTV’s Brian Williams will be recognized at the 15th Annual Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards during a presentation luncheon at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Wednesday, October 13, 2010.

Starkman, a Toronto native who has been reporting on sports for nearly 30 years, has covered a dozen Olympic Games and is a two-time National Newspaper Award winner.

He’s also an author. Two of his books, “On the Edge” and “Fire on Ice”, focused on winter sports, skiing and hockey. He is currently working on a book with Olympic Champion Clara Hughes. He will receive the award for outstanding sportswriting.

Broadcaster Brian Williams is also no stranger to the Olympics. He was CTV’s prime time anchor for the coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Often called the dean of Olympic sports broadcasting in Canada he has covered winter and summer Olympic Games since 1976.

He has won six Gemini Awards and two Foster Hewitt Awards. Williams will be presented with the award for outstanding sports broadcasting.

Also being honoured at the awards luncheon are John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, who has been named as Canadian Sports Executive of the Year.

The 2010 President’s Award will be presented to Dick Bradbeer of Toronto who has been an integral part of the Sports Media Canada Awards  since their inception 15 years ago.
