60 young sports journalists from five continents are heading for the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen for a young reporters training program at the 26th Summer Universiade.

Jointly organized by AIPS, FISU – the International University Sports Federation and the Shenzhen 2011 Organising Committee, it is the very first program of its kind to be conducted at a university games.
Thirty young journalists selected by AIPS (including one from Canada), 10 from FISU (including two Canadians) and 20 local Chinese journalists will be tutored and mentored by sports press veterans from AIPS and will participate in a number of high-level seminars conducted by international sports experts and federation representatives.
Expert seminars
Seminars will be conducted by Anthony Edgar, Head of IOC Olympic Games Media Operations, Terence O’Rorke, Senior Manager Media Relations and Communications, WADA, Alexander Koch, Communications and Marketing Executive, FIFA and Matthieu Reeb, Secretary General of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). They will be joined by Bruno Grandi, President International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), Risto Nieminen, President World Lottery Association (WLA), Nicolas Messner, Head of Communications, International Judo Federation (IJF).
“The aim of the program is to give the young reporters a broad experience and to provide them with knowledge that will form a firm career base,” AIPS President Gianni Merlo said. “It is very important they experience a multi-sport event and a Universiade is the ideal situation for a first-time experience,” Merlo added.
“The fact that a large number of high profile international experts will join the program is indicative of the importance placed on the education of the younger generation of sports journalists,” the AIPS President said.
Participants in the program will submit articles to their own media as well as to the AIPS, FISU and Shenzhen Universiade web platforms and local media including the China Daily newspaper.

Among the AIPS mentors and trainers are Sports Media Canada President Steve McAllister, Gianni Merlo, AIPS President, Esat Yilmaer, AIPS First-vice president and President Turkish Sports Writers’ Association, Roslyn Morris, AIPS Secretary General, Zhang Haifeng, member AIPS Executive Committee, and President China Sports Press Association, Gu Yaoming, Advisor to AIPS president and former AIPS Executive Committee member, Mr Deszo Dobor, AIPS Executive Committee, Evelyn Watta, AIPS Executive Committee, and Chairman of the AIPS New Media Commission, Chan Fai (Raymond) Chan, Secretary General Hong Kong Sports Press Association, Zhou Jing, Deputy Secretary General, China Sports Press Association, and Andrea Giannini. Alan Abrahamson, 3wire sports is coordinating the curriculum as program director.
