2012 – Hal Walker

Hal Walker

Hal Walker worked his way up from copy boy at the old Mail and Empire to sports reporter for The Globe and Mail.
What a rollicking sports department that was: Hal, his brother Gord, Jim Coleman, Scott Young, Trent Frayne – fabled names in the annals of Canadian sports journalism and now all on the Sports Media Canada Honour Roll!
Hal later became Sports Editor of the Toronto Telegram then headed the sports team at the Calgary Herald.
His first love was Canadian football. A former referee in the Ontario Rugby Football Union, he covered the CFL for over 40 years. The Grey Cup was his favourite event and for 39 years he reported on every game.
Born on April 1, 1913, Hal passed away on March 12, 1978. His devotion to football was recognized in 1979 when he, Ivan Miller, Baz O’Meara and Ted Reeve were in the inaugural group named to the Football Reporters of Canada Hall of Fame. In 1982, brother Gord, was inducted into that same FRC Hall of Fame.
