Sports Media Canada Awards Presentations less than a month away

The 18th annual Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards will be presented in four weeks (on October 21) at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Some tickets for the prestigious annual event are still available. One of the major Awards is that presented in recognition of an outstanding career in Canadian Sports Journalism. The 2013 Award will be presented to radio sports veteran Bob McCown of Sportsnet’s The Fan.

Among other distinguished Canadian sports journalists who’ve received the Career Award are: Jim Coleman, Johnny Esaw, Jim Proudfoot, Milt Dunnell, Bill Stephenson, Jane O’Hara, George Gross, Dave Hodge and Don Chevrier.
Receiving the Outstanding Sports Broadcasting Award this year is Joe Bowen, voice of the radio coverage of Toronto Maple Leaf games. The Outstanding Sportswriting Award will be presented to Steve Simmons of Sun Media. The Outstanding Sports Photography recognition will be accorded posthumously to Mike Cassese of Reuters.
Named the Outstanding Canadian Sports Executive of the Year is Cam Russell of the Halifax Mooseheads hockey organization and the special annual President’s Award will be received by Canadian golf executive legend Dick Grimm.
Three posthumous awards will be presented – to Alec Bollini, veteran of CBC Radio International sports broadcasts in Montreal and Toronto, to Canadian TV Sports broadcaster and producer Tom McKee, and to Frank Selke, Jr. hockey TV commentator and team executive.
