Jerry Howarth, who for 36 years entertained and informed baseball fans across Canada as a radio broadcaster on the Toronto Blue Jays/Sportsnet Radio network, will be among nine men and women honoured at the 23rd Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards luncheon at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Thursday, November 15.

Howarth, who has previously been honoured at the luncheon as an awards recipient in the Broadcasting category, is the latest Canadian sports media star to receive the Career Achievement award.

The 2018 luncheon will pay special tribute to Don Goodwin and George Gross by presenting the families of the Sports Media Canada co-founders with the President’s Award. Goodwin passed away in August, just over a decade since the death of Gross. The two men were instrumental in creating the Achievement Awards to recognize the outstanding work annually by members of the Canadian sport media industry.

Three current members of the industry will be among the honourees on Nov. 15. Hockey Night In Canada’s Scott Oake will receive the Broadcasting award, baseball writer John Lott of The Athletic is the recipient of the 2018 Sportswriting award, and Leah Hennel of Postmedia Calgary will receive the Photography Award.

James Christie, the long-time Olympic sportswriter for The Globe and Mail, and broadcaster Gilles Tremblay of La Soiree du hockey will join the Sports Media Canada’s Posthumous Honour Roll.

Karen O’Neill, the chief executive officer of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, will receive the Sports Executive of the Year award.
