Carlos Garcia retires from Sports Media Canada

Carlos Garcia has been involved with Sports Media Canada since its formal inception in 1991. He served as Honorary Secretary, as a Vice President and latterly as a member of the Board of Directors. George Gross established Canada’s bona fides as a strong member of the AIPS Executive Board when he served for several years as a Vice President of the International body. Shortly after George left the AIPS Executive, Carlos assumed Canada’s prominent involvement with it — elected First Vice President. He had also been a valuable member of the FEPEDA executive — including a stint as President of that body. FEPEDA is a sub group of AIPS representing North and South America. A native of Uruguay, his fluency in Spanish as well as English made him a valuable officer of Sports Media Canada, FEPEDA and AIPS.

Carlos has re-oriented his activities in recent years, now spending most of his time in Uruguay and little in Canada leading him to resign from Sports Media Canada as he has from both FEPEDA and AIPS.
In a letter to Sports Media Canada president Steve McAllister this week, Carlos said: “I had the privilege to represent Sports Media Canada in several capacities to the best of my ability, most recently as President of FEPEDA and AIPS’ First Vice President. I am deeply grateful and honored for such a great opportunity but facts of life change and I do not want to just hang on in an organization when I no longer can effectively contribute to its development. A few months short of 65 I have retired from full time sport journalism and now spend very little time in Canada. Many thanks to all my Sports Media Canada and journalism colleagues in Canada. I continue to be with you in spirit.”
In a response to Carlos, Sports Media Canada president Steve McAllister wrote: “On behalf of Don Goodwin and the rest of the Sports Media Canada family, I regretfully accept your decision to step down from the Sports Media Canada board. You should feel very proud of your involvement with the organization over the past 20-plus years. Thanks largely to the work put in by you, George and Don over that period, Sports Media Canada has earned a stellar reputation within AIPS and there’s no doubt that the AIPS Congresses hosted by Canada in Quebec City and Toronto – along with the presence of both George and yourself at the executive level – were cornerstones in building that reputation.”
