By the age of five, Amit Shilton had memorized the entire roster of the ‘92 Blue Jays. Shilton, 21, a native of North York, didn’t realize he could earn a living from one of his favourite pastimes until a high school teacher turned him on to the impact of writing. He’s been laying the groundwork for a career in sports journalism ever since.

After earning a spot in Ryerson University’s highly competitive journalism program four years ago, Shilton swiftly settled in to the student paper’s sports department as a reporter, and in short order grabbed the reigns as the section’s editor. Under his leadership, The Eyeopener’s sports section received numerous accolades.

While finishing his final year at Ryerson, Shilton is working part-time on the sports desk at Canadian Press and is completing an internship at the Toronto Sun, where he’s focusing on amateur athletics.

Shilton says he’s willing to go just about anywhere to pursue his dream.

“If I could write the rest of my life, I’d be happy.”
