Cam Cole is Repeat Recipient

VANCOUVER — Often provocative. Regularly humourous. Always a must-read.
Vancouver Sun columnist Cam Cole doesn’t need awards as proof he is one the most respected and influential sports writers in Canada — but he keeps getting them anyway.

Cam Cole

On Wednesday, Cole was named winner of the Sports Media Canada George Gross Award for Outstanding Sportswriting.
Past winners of the George Gross Award include Randy Starkman, Dave Shoalts, Paul Waldie, Dave Stubbs, Michael Farber, George Johnson, Pierre LeBrun and Terry Jones.
Cole is the first repeat winner, having also won the award in 2004.
“Many of the writers I respect most in our country have won this award over the past decade — and I’ve been particularly happy for the guys who grind out columns four or five days a week in the newspaper — so believe me, it’s a thrill to be the award’s first two-time winner,” said Cole. “Seven years ago, when I went to the awards luncheon at the Royal York, the first two people who stuck out their hands to shake mine when I walked in the door were Red Kelly and Johnny Bower, and I felt as though they had mistaken me for someone else. I hadn’t realized until that time what a big deal the SMC Award was. I’m just happy to get another one in before Bruce Arthur starts winning it every year.”
TSN host James Duthie is being recognized for excellence in sports broadcasting, while Sports Media Canada’s award for outstanding photography is being presented posthumously this year to Shaun Best, a Montreal-based Reuters photographer, who died earlier this year of an apparent heart attack after covering the Canadian Grand Prix.
The awards will be presented at the annual Sports Media Canada luncheon Oct. 3 in Toronto.
