Blogville

There’s a Sports Media Canada member covering most sports events of note. He or she will be one of the busiest people at the event -- closely observing, checking details, interviewing the key people and writing the stories and taking the pictures -- or facing the cameras or microphones to help fans know and understand ‘What Happened’ at the event and in their favourite sport.
Sometimes the sports journalist will relay their observations in the form of a Blog. The Blog is usually a revelation of a more personal reaction to the event and its participants -- more like an opinion column than the conventional ‘here are the facts’ report.
From time to time that Sports Media Canada member will Blog more about some aspects of covering the event and the media assembled for coverage -- and share it with you via the Sports Media Canada website and the department we call BlogVille.

‘BoniBlog – Canadian feel to opening of Grapefruit League

The weather: Sunny but frigid for Florida – 48 degrees Fahrenheit, with a cold north wind clocking in at 21 miles per hour (that’s nine degrees Celsius and 34 kilometres per hour for us Canucks). The crowd at Dunedin Stadium: Dressed as warmly as possible, many sporting Canada Olympic gear – and proudly one might … [Read More …]

‘BoniBlog – Taking a shot of Fred Thornhill for a change

Stunned might be the way to describe the look on photographer Fred Thornhill’s face when I told him to smile for the camera, in this case my mini Canon PowerShot A75. There he was, on one knee with his massive 400 mm sports lens zeroing in on the Blue Jays for their final workout at … [Read More …]

About the ‘BoniBlogs and the Blogger

NOTE: This Blog was written by Roslyn Morris, the AIPS Secretary General who shared the AIPS office with our John Iaboni (author of the ‘BoniBlogs daily throughout the Vancouver Games) at the Vancouver airport while awaiting her flight to head home to Australia. Ros was so busy winding up AIPS affairs before leaving for home … [Read More …]

'BoniBlog – So Long Vancouver, Hello Florida

SOME LOOSE ENDS FROM VANCOUVER: One of the final things I did last Friday when I last saw Roslyn Morris, Secretary General of AIPS, was to strongly advise her to attend the Sunday Gold-Medal game in men’s ice hockey between Canada and the USA. Due to her workload, she hadn’t been to an Olympics competition … [Read More …]

‘BoniBlog – Great memories from Vancouver

Today marks my final day at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games and I leave here having thoroughly enjoyed this journey. This last ‘BoniBlog from these Olympics is the toughest to write, knowing I want to say it all and say it well while telling it in a way that does it justice. First: The … [Read More …]

‘BoniBlog – Echoes of 1972 – with a twist

I was at the Montreal Forum on Saturday, September 2, 1972. I was 21 years old working for a newspaper – The Toronto Sun – which was less than a year old. There I was covering The Summit Series between Team Canada and the Soviet Union, like, pretty remarkable now that I think of it! … [Read More …]

‘BoniBlog – Jonesy is a Games’ kind of guy

Keeping score on the lengthy – and accomplished – career of Terry Jones is no easy feat. “There aren’t really statistics for sports writers other than event coverages,” the man called “Jonesy” said during cocktail hour of the Laureus/AIPS World Press Nite Vancouver. “I’d love to know how many national anthems I’ve stood for, airline … [Read More …]

‘BoniBlog – Mourning not the same as being down

Sports Media Canada’s John Iaboni is working out of the AIPS office to assist media at the Vancouver Games. His ‘BoniBlog has been appearing here daily during the epic event. The media – and I’ve been as guilty of this as anyone over the years – often takes liberties with the word “mourning.” What happened … [Read More …]
