Steve’s Globe duties were expanded not long ago to oversee the growth and development of the website. It has grown in size, scope and importance to the point where it needs the fulltime attention of an able manager and leader.

During his tenure as Sports Editor of the paper, the Globe relied on him to coordinate coverage of three Olympic Games (2002 Salt Lake City, 2004 Athens and 2006 Turin), along with special coverage of the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators in the Stanley Cup finals.

In the new position as editor of globesports.com Steve will focus on working with the sports department and online team at the Globe to produce content for what has become the premier newspaper website in the country.

Most of Steve’s time in communications has been in newspapers large and small … but he also put in a few years as Communications Director for Tennis Canada …. so he has worked ‘both sides of the street’ so to speak.

That’s one of his new responsibilities. The other is his recent election as President of Sports Media Canada. Steve had been replacing former President George Gross who died on Good Friday 2008.

Among the pressing challenges facing him in the Sports Media Canada role, Steve will lead an eight-person Board of Directors on to the next Achievement Awards process with the start of planning for the 2009 Awards Luncheon slated for next October.

The heart attack death of George Gross left a large gap in the Sports Media Canada administration team but Steve who had been serving as the association’s First Vice President is now even better positioned to handle the role, having dealt with it so ably while filling out George Gross’ term until the recent Sports Media Canada quadrennial election of officers.

With his election to carry on in the President’s office, Steve will continue to be strongly supported by Don Goodwin who returns as Executive Vice President and COO and by Jane O’Hara who replaces Steve as First Vice President. The five members elected to the Board of Directors are: Fred Walker, Alec Bollini, Diana Zlomislic, Carlos Garcia and John Hinnen.
