Ryan’s Outstanding Sports Photo, which appears on the cover of this magazine, was taken at the Synchronized Diving event of last year’s Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. The new synchro diving event produced many fresh photo opportunities offering, as it does, several visually striking elements during each dive.

Canadians Emilie Heymans from Greenfield Park, Quebec and Anne Montminy from Pointe Claire, Quebec are the subject of our cover photo. Ryan’s shot of one of the pair’s competitive performances serves as a record of one of Canada’s medal-winning moments. The young Quebec duo won the 10m platform Olympic Silver Medal at Sydney last fall.

Ryan’s talent was also recognized by the National Newspaper Awards this year as their sports photography award winner. It was his third nomination since he joined CP in 1982.

Ryan won his first National Newspaper Award for spot news in 1998. The award-winning shot was his photo of a grieving Trudeau family leaving son Michel’s funeral.

Ryan Remiorz was also nominated for a National Newspaper Award in 1995. It was his photo of a giant Canadian flag at a unity rally which earned the 1995 award nomination.
