2005 Student Award to Rowan Anderson

Sports Media Canada announced the latest recipients of its annual Achievement Awards at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on October 19, 2005. The upbeat short speech by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and awards to several of Canada’s leading sports journalists and sport and sports media executives somewhat upstaged the annual award to an outstanding student journalist — but Sports Media Canada considers it one of the key annual awards.

For 2005, New Brunswick native Rowan Anderson, a student at the University of Western Ontario was named as recipient of the $2000 bursary to complete studies in sports journalism and the one week ‘immersion’ experience with several of Canada’s leading sports media organizations in Toronto.

Rowan was introduced to the Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards Luncheon by Diana Zlomislic of the Toronto Star, member of the Sports Media Canada Board of Directors and continuing Chair of the Student Award selection committee. Veteran sports journalist Jane O’Hara, a vice president of Sports Media Canada, presented the Bursary cheque to Rowan at the Awards Luncheon.

Jane O’Hara organized and supervised the week-long ‘immersion’ experience in Toronto for Rowan and will offer continuing mentoring availability for the rest of his time as a student.
