2011 – Lloyd Robertson

Lloyd Robertson

For 60 years, Lloyd Robertson put his own unique mark on the biggest events around the world with that iconic baritone voice and a demeanor that inspired trust among Canadians watching the news. Over those six decades, Robertson has been one of the faces – and voices – informing and touching people across the country with his reporting and perspective on the milestone moments in sports.
Robertson is the recipient of the Sports Media Canada President’s Award in recognition of the stamp he has put on the country’s biggest sports moments. That list includes nine Olympic Games, the 1972 Summit Series, the Wayne Gretzky trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings, Mike Weir’s victory at the Masters, and the Toronto Blue Jays’ journey to their back-to-back World Series titles.
For the Stratford, Ont., native,  who, during a phone conversation last month to tell him he was being honoured by Sports Media Canada made it clear he was “semi-retired” as he will continue to be involved with CTV News on various projects, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics clearly reflected his ability to connect with Canadians and his passion for his craft.
“From the moment the torch touched Canadian soil, to the closing ceremonies of the Games, I felt an outpouring of national spirit that I haven’t experienced since the Centennial celebrations of 1967,” said Robertson in his bio on the CTV website. “Vancouver 2010 marks the ninth time I have covered the Olympic Games, but this experience was something brand new, and is one of the most memorable events I have covered. I am honoured and humbled to have the opportunity to be part of this moment that united our country in a deep sense of patriotism and national pride. Canada and Canadians illustrated that we are quite comfortable being the star of the show. Each day, sharing so many inspiring stories about athletes – and Canadians that rallied non-stop throughout the Games – rekindled my excitement to share in this historic moment, while experiencing it all first-hand.”
Our President’s Award is the latest honour for the long-time newsman, who was the first journalist inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2007, has three times been named the “Best Host, Anchor or Interviewer” by the Gemini Awards and has been awarded the Order of Canada.
For more than a half-century, Lloyd Robertson shared his gift for telling the news and stories of Canadians who made a difference. Sports Media Canada is proud to recognize and honour that gift with the President’s Award.
